Robe Coastal Town south east of Adelaide
We left Wentworth and traveled via Mildura Ouyen and back west to Pinnaroo just back into SA from there we went via Border Town and Kingston SE lovely place then on to Robe. On the way to Robe we heard an ominous sound and one of the trailer wheels had blown out come off and disappeared into long grass. We stopped a couple of hundred yards from the blow out and as I went back to look for the wheel I could see smoke coming up from the grassy field – panic. People from three vehicles that had stopped put out the fire, which our wheel had caused, and before I could get there one guy had the wheel in the back of his Ute and was bringing it back for us. There are lots of good folk around.
We arrived in Robe and looked up a contact we had made in Derby way back when. Colin and Kae Milhead. By luck we had parked only short distance their house, he could see us from his window. Colin directed us to a trailer maker and we booked into the caravan park. We had to wait several days for the trailer maker to be able to do our job and get the parts and new tyre (the wheel was still ok). Colin took us for a sight seeing tour around the area and it is really very lovely after all the flat dry country we had been in. Next day he came and asked if we would like to see the seal colony about 4klms off shore. Of course we jumped at the chance and went out in his runabout. Colin owns a Cray trawler and after viewing the seals which were many and spectacular and came out to play around our boat. They are so friendly. We then went and met up with his Cray boat and the skipper told us that their “special” seal had been on and off the boat but had gone now. There is an opening in the side of the deck where the seal can jump on board.
Did I mention that the weather was especially nice which added to this very memorable experience. Later Colin rang and said he was cooking the Cray that the boat had bought back. So, up to his place we went. It was the most enormous Cray we had ever seen and there were 8 sand crabs as well. We had two meals from the meat in the crays head and legs, two meals of crab and still have the cray tail in the freeze. It is cut in half and will be a large meal for us from each side. Robe is a lovely town and has large influxes of tourists in summer and holiday times. Lots to see and do.
The trailer was fixed and after many $$$’s we headed off.
